Several intrepid SYC and BBVYC boats ventured out to Roche Harbor for the annual Bob Webber Memorial Fishing Derby again this year. Those who braved the elements were rewarded with great fishing weather, a bounty of Silver salmon and a great weekend of fun.
The two day Derby action commenced on Friday. Quite a number of anglers availed themselves of the comforts aboard M/V Gilliano. Captain Wayne adeptly found the fish and the crew returned with seven sparkly silver salmon. Captain Larry and M/V Yachts-A-Fun, however wound up scoring the biggest fish of the weekend that day.
Following the weigh-in, co-host Dennis helped get everyone prepare their catch with a demonstration of filleting techniques.
SYC member Randy gave a live demonstration of state-of-the-art water rescue techniques using his newly patented Rescu Swimm’r device. All watching were amazed at the ease with which Randy was able to get the rescue float to the mark. All boaters should consider taking the Coast Guards lead and installing this invaluable tool on their vessel.
The evening featured heavy appetizer pot luck dinner, as well as a blind wine tasting. Wines were placed in brown paper bags as the group sampled in search of a favorite.
Day two anglers enjoyed calm water, dry skies and ample fish. While the guys enjoyed the comfortable fishing on board M/V Gilliano, the gals ventured about the island in search of treasure.
On Saturday evening, our hosts prepared a delicious dinner of salmon, corn, salads and dessert. The awards ceremony followed, with prizes being awarded for biggest fish (Larry), smallest fish (Gary) and most fish (Mark). Everyone went home a winner, with wonderful donated
items (thanks donors!) and door prizes galore! We also toasted several members celebrating birthdays over the weekend. What little rain we experienced seem to limit itself to the late evening hours, allowing all to enjoy a warm chocolate milk before settling in.
The same smooth water that we enjoyed on the trip over, greeted us again Sunday morning, as most departed back to home port.
Kudos to cruise hosts Irene and Dennis (Morning ), Diane and Wayne (Gulliano) and Lynette and Jeff (Elysian) for putting together another wonderful SYC cruise event.
