This year the ever popular SYC Pig Roast returned to the beautiful home of Dick and Colleen Hardman at Silva Bay, BC. This is the 7th year that Dick and Colleen have so generously hosted this SYC event at their lovely Gabriola Island home.
Thirty-four boats made their way to Silva Bay in pretty acceptable weather and sea conditions. We even had members (Ed & Marion) arrive by seaplane! In all, 69 members and 16 guests attended the Pig Roast this year.
The weekend got started on Friday evening with Happy Hour get together, hosted by Bob and Pat (Phase 2), held on the upper deck at the Silva Bay Marina.
Bocce Ball “…a relaxed but strategic game with an ancient lineage, probably emerging from ancient Egypt. Today, bocce is a calming, competitive way to spend a few hours outdoors in the pleasant company of friends”
On Saturday, 20 teams took to the apple orchard (courts) for the infamous SYC Bocce Ball Tournament. After several hours of “competitive calmness”, 2 teams survived to make it to the final game, strategically planned to be after the big Pig Roast dinner. In the end, Team Linda (Linda O, Karen Z, Jeff M-R & Don B) prevailed after being taken to a final game by Team Joan (Joan S, Frank H, Andy K & Taylor K) in the final series to take the coveted SYC Bocce Cup.
A big Thank-You to Ron and Pat for organizing the bocce ball tournament!
This year was particularly special and noteworthy as Host Extraordinaire Dick Hardman organized and prepared all the food for the Pig Roast dinner. Amongst the dishes that he provided for us were punch, beans, coleslaw, corn, Dick’s homemade (and estate grown) applesauce, shredded pork, and the menu feature – the roast pig.
Preparations for the roasting of the Pig commenced on Friday night after our Happy Hour with Dick starting the fire in the in-ground pit. The pig was lowered into the fire pit early Saturday morning and was later ceremoniously raised and carved for our delicious meal. Colleen enhanced the beautiful setting with her decorations and fresh flowers on every table.
Kudos and thanks to Co-Hosts Dick & Colleen, Ron & Pat and Walt & Joan for all of their help putting on an outstanding event.
