Our Memorial Weekend cruise to Roche Harbor will include a special new feature – free time. Time set aside to relax, shop, dine or explore the many local points of interest.
Many great suggestions can be found in the brochure “A Walking Tour of Historic Roche Harbor”, available from your cruise hosts or at the Hotel de Haro lobby.
Here are a few other ideas of things to see or do within a short distance of the marina:
Taste the Island Spirits:
An invigorating 20 minute walk from the marina is the San Juan Island Distillery. Using a hammered copper Adolf Adrian still, SJID produces a variety of small batch spirits and ciders. “Taste the Spirits of the San Juan Islands”, including 12 different gins, several liquors, flavored brandies and an award winning apple brandy.
The tasting room is open every Saturday (and Sunday on Memorial Weekend) from 1 to 4 pm. (360) 472-1532

Visit the Sculpture Garden:
Experience nature and art working in harmony at the San Juan Islands Sculpture Park. Even if you have been before, the art you see will be different, as existing pieces are rotated out or sold regularly and new pieces and artists added.
The garden is just a short walk up the hill toward the airport. Open daily dawn to dusk. Donations are appreciated.
Play Bocce Ball:
The bocce courts are open for your practice sessions for our upcoming ‘Pig Roast’ bocce competition. Just next to the Roche Harbor General Store, two 65-foot, side-by-side courts can be found, bedded with crushed oyster shell to provide an authentic bocce experience. (Hopefully this will not mess up your rough grass game skills.)
You should find bocce balls at the courts, or check out a set from a cruise host.
Take a dip in the Resort Pool:
Your marina guest reservation includes complimentary access to the resort’s (86 degree) outdoor pool, so grab a towel, your sunglasses and some lotion and go take a dip.
The pool is open daily. Towels and locker room access are included.
Take a Hike:
Many miles of trails start from the resort and fan out into the forests and farmland near Roche Harbor. These trails are maintained by a dedicated group of volunteers committed to creating opportunities to immerse oneself in the natural beauty surrounding the resort. Walk through woods, pastures, lagoons, quarries, and marshes to experience the variety of landscapes just your steps from the marina.

Roche Harbor is also adjacent to a National Historic Park and National Monument lands, all connected by trails directly out of the resort. A trail map for the nearby Roche Harbor Highland and English Camp trails can be viewed here.
Go Kayaking:
Paddle in and around the protected waters of Roche Harbor in a sea kayak or paddle board. Just at the head of the marina dock you will find San Juan Island Outfitters.
SJIO is open daily for sea kayak rentals and tours and paddle board rentals.
Go Shopping!:

Do Nothing at All:
“Downtime is where we become ourselves, looking into the middle distance, kicking at the curb, lying on the grass or sitting on the stoop and staring at the tedious blue of the summer sky. I don’t believe you can write poetry, or compose music, or become an actor without downtime, and plenty of it, a hiatus that passes for boredom but is really the quiet moving of the wheels inside that fuel creativity.” – Ann Quindlen
