What a great turnout! Three years ago this cruise started out with just four boats and has now grown to the point where we took over the dock in Prevost Harbor. Some rafted, while others anchored out perhaps to escape the rowdies on the dock!
Friday evening found us enjoying Walt and Joan Shemly’s boat, “Mariner,” for heavy appetizers and drinks as the rain showers arrived.
On Saturday morning, the sun broke through for the day while we relaxed with coffee, muffins, yogurt, etc. and we made plans for either a walk to the Turn Point Light Station or a quick dinghy ride to the county dock to begin a shorter hike out to the light station.
James (Jim) Bergquist, our host for the tour, offered us rides out to the light station but we all opted for a nice walk, though on the return many of us welcomed the ride up the hill. He had to make two trips to accommodate us all!
The lightkeeper’s residence has been decorated in 1950’s style furniture and took many us back in time to our childhood. We were taken into areas that as of yet are not open to the general public and are still being renovated. Jim has compiled and written a book on “The History of Stuart Island” and shared with us stories of the pioneer families. A group has been formed called Turn Point Lighthouse Preservation Society which is dedicated to preserving and restoring the Light Station and the buildings.
Saturday evening found us gathered on the point, building a fire and enjoying traditional “hot dogs” over the fire, with Dawn Douthwaite’s special S’mores for dessert.
There were games to “test our lifesaving skills” which brought laughs to all, and prizes to some.
Sunday found us enjoying another great breakfast, lots of coffee and a drawing for some special gifts provided by the club’s “storage shed” before heading home. You never know what will be found in a storage shed!
We hope everyone enjoyed the weekend. Thanks to the Douthwaites for planning such a fun weekend. To our organizers and participants, thank you all for coming and helping to make it another successful Semiahmoo Yacht Club Cruise. See you in 2017, same time, same place.
