OPENING DAY 2026 (Recap)
The Semiahmoo YC celebrated its Opening Day of the 2026 Boating Season on May 2nd with traditional festivities. Members gathered for a Flag Raising & Blessing of the Fleet ceremony, which was followed by the Commodore's Sail Past in Dreyton Harbor and, afterwhich, everyone retreated to the Silver Reef Casino-Resort in Ferndale for a SYC-sponsored Opening Day Luncheon. And, with that....the 2026 boating season was officially underway!
Flag Raising & Blessing of the Fleet
At Blaine Harbor Marina, Commodore Jason Sloan welcomed Members and acknowledged several SYC Past Commodores who were present. Dick Hardman led the Blessing of the Fleet and a prayer focused on peace, patience, and safe boating in the coming year. USA and Canadian flags and the Semiahmoo Yacht Club burgee were raised to the accompaniment of their respective national anthems and music. The honor of raising the Canadian flag went to Vice Commodore Janice Cosenzo; the USA flag was hoisted by Past Commodore Mel Kolstad; and Fleet Captain Bob Giles raised the SYC burgee. All three flags flew proudly as everyone gathered for a group picture.
Commodore's Sail Past: Following the Flag Raising, several member-vessels assembled near the Dreyton Harbor entry buoys before re-entering the harbor, where they paraded past an anchored MV The Grace to honor Commodore Jason Sloan and his wife, Kirsten. Jason and Kirsten stood proudly at the bow, dipping the American flag in recognition of the salutes rendered by the parade of boats as they passed by. The parade of boats was led by the MV Kimberly Dawn (Bob and Kim Giles). Many SYC members were "on the rails" aboard each of the boats to honor the Commodore and enjoy the camaraderie that comes with participating in a traditional Sail Past.
Opening Day Luncheon
After the Commodore's Sail Past, members gathered at the Silver Reef Casino-Hotel in Ferndale for the Club-sponsored Opening Day Luncheon. As always, the Silver Reef staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and special. The energy in the room was charged with lively conversation and brotherhood. While the focus was on having a great meal and a fun time together, some essential Club business was accomplished: Club officers, key volunteers, and new members were acknowledged and introduced; Club merchandise was available for sale; and, most important, tickets for door prizes and a 50:50 drawing, SYC 45th Anniversary tee shirts, 2026 Membership Annuals, and Member Cards were distributed to those present.
Please plan on joining us at Opening Day 2027. But, for now...Opening Day 2026 is history!
