2016 Commodore’s Ball

The Commodore's Ball is the social event of the year for members of the Semiahmoo Yacht Club. For this year's event, over one hundred SYC members joined Commodore Lynette at the Silver Reef Resort in Ferndale to help celebrate an outstanding year with an evening of food, fun and dancing. Donning their finest evening attire, many members began the evening with a pre-event gathering in our hospitality suite. Then it was down to the hotel Ballroom, elegantly decorated to reflect the Commodore's...

Sidney by the Sea Cruise

The cruisers to the unique seaside town of Sidney started off Friday evening with appetizers and a boat hop. The boat hop was a fun way to get better acquainted with fellow SYC members and meet guests. On Saturday night one group visited beautiful Butchart Gardens, enjoyed great musical entertainment by the Sutcliffes Band, which was followed by an ethereal fireworks performance. The fireworks choreography and music were magnificent. To top off the evening, a pipe organ concert played in the...

On the third weekend in June, twenty plus boats and over forty five hearty SYC members braved the less than stellar weather and ventured to Sucia Island. Nauti-Friday the 13th

Our Friday May 13th Nauti-Friday at Charlie Don’t Surf saw 30 of SYC’s members gathered for an evening of tasty seafood and camaraderie. We sure lucked out this Friday the 13th! The casual atmosphere and summer weather made for a perfect evening of fun in the sun and enjoyment of the Semiamhoo Bay seaside and White Rock pier. Once again the service was excellent with friendly staff that provided prompt and efficient service. My vote is to make Charlie’s a repeat next year! Special thanks to...

DHM’s NN59 Sailboat Restoration Update

It’s been a while since I last provided a report to you all on the NN59 Sailboat’s restoration. Shipwright Alaniz is still working on the sailboat’s re-decking project. The re-decking of the sailboat has been much more complicated than what first meets the eye. Much like about everything else that we have been doing restoring this sailboat, there is much more to be done that first thought. However, we are dedicated to repairing/restoring this former APA salmon boat with the care and quality...

Ice Breaker Cruise

What a great turnout! Three years ago this cruise started out with just four boats and has now grown to the point where we took over the dock in Prevost Harbor. Some rafted, while others anchored out perhaps to escape the rowdies on the dock! Friday evening found us enjoying Walt and Joan Shemly’s boat, “Mariner,” for heavy appetizers and drinks as the rain showers arrived. On Saturday morning, the sun broke through for the day while we relaxed with coffee, muffins, yogurt, etc. and we made...

Spring Cleaning at Semiahmoo Marina

On Saturday, April 23rd, boaters from Semiahmoo Marina and club members from Semiahmoo Yacht Club partnered to spruce up the marina for the coming boating season. There was a great turn out and much work was done. The curbs were re-painted, the flower pots were re-potted, lots of weeding was done, the grounds were mulched and plants were trimmed. Windows were washed until they sparkled too. As part of the spring-cleaning, the marina properly disposed of old and tattered flags by burning them...

Messing About with Boats – Fun or Frustration

"Believe me, my young friend; there is nothing--absolutely nothing--half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats." With that remark to Mole, Water Rat set the standard for boat ownership. Or did he? First let’s define the term. Everything was beautiful – a warm sunny afternoon, not too much wind on the nose, and Spiritus II, our new-to-us Hunter Legend 40.5, humming towards Secret Cove. I was single handing the boat along with our poodle deckhand Ali’i, looking forward to having...
